What Teachers and School Leaders Say About Turn and Go Writing

Colin Hogan, Head of School

Stephanie Silver, 7th Grade English Language Arts Teacher

As a writing teacher, I am always concerned with students' ability to organize thoughts and develop communication skills for life. The Turn and Go Writing program provides the structure that developing writers so desperately need. The program really breaks down the steps and simplifies the writing process so that students are not overwhelmed and have the confidence to hit every point and attack each writing task.

After returning back to the classroom post distance learning, I was concerned with writing regression. However, I followed the Turn and Go Writing program with fidelity, and my students were 81% proficient in ELA on their first standardized test in two years! Because of Turn and Go Writing, thesis statements strengthened and students became confident with their arguments. As a writing teacher, I also noticed that I actually spend LESS time on writing instruction because the process is so straightforward.

TAG's most important benefit is the confidence it instills in my students. Working with the Turn and Go Writing team also made me a more confident writing teacher. Whenever I had a question, noticed a pattern, or thought something needed to be tweaked, they were all ears. This level of collaboration is hard to find; Katie and Zoe make you feel like you are part of an incredibly supportive team.

Allyson Szecsi, 5th-8th Grade Special Education Teacher

TAG has been a huge help with teaching writing to my special education students and helps them understand each part that is needed in a strong written response. The program provides concrete steps that every type of learner can use and a common language for each component of a written response across all classrooms, disciplines, and grades in my school. Katie and Zoe designed a program that meets all students where they are and helps their writing grow from there.

I went from sometimes feeling lost when teaching writing to my class of students with very different learning styles and abilities to finding a program that just makes sense to each of them. Thanks, Katie and Zoe, for helping me teach my students to be better and more confident writers!”

Mike Lee, 3rd Grade Teacher

“The Turn and Go Writing program has been a breath of fresh air as an educator trying to make writing interactive but also rigorous for my students. I have been an educator for over eight years and have worked with many different writing programs. Each writing program had its pros and cons, but Turn and Go Writing is an extensive yet easy-to-use program that really breaks down writing expectations for my third grade students. The checklists allow teachers and students to see what the overall objective would be.  The color-coded guide allows students to visually break down their own writing.

Introducing elementary students to ‘thesis writing’ and ‘creating claims with support and text evidence’ gives them a head start to college and career readiness. The program challenges my writers to really analyze and dissect a text. I am very impressed with the Turn and Go Writing program and how it pushes my students to become better writers and readers.”
